Work Visa Checklist: What to Prepare Before You Apply

Passport being stamped with visa documents

Most delays in Gulf work visa processing don't come from the embassy or the employer — they come from paperwork that was incomplete, expired, or inconsistent from the start. Here's what to have ready before you begin.

1. A passport with real validity left

Most Gulf countries require at least six months of validity remaining on your passport at the time of travel, not just at the time of application. If your passport is getting close to that window, renew it before starting the visa process rather than during it.

2. A valid, signed job offer or contract

Your offer letter or employment contract needs to match the job title and visa category being applied for. A mismatch between what's on the contract and what's declared on the visa application is one of the most common causes of rejection or delay.

3. Educational and professional documents, attested

Degrees, diplomas, and professional certificates usually need to be attested — typically by the relevant education board, then the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and finally the embassy of the destination country. Attestation takes time, so start this early rather than after your visa is otherwise ready.

4. Medical fitness test

Most Gulf work visas require a medical exam from an approved testing center, checking for a standard list of communicable diseases. Results are usually valid for a limited window, so timing this close to your actual travel date matters — an expired medical report means retesting.

5. Police clearance certificate

A clean police character certificate is a standard requirement for most work visa categories. This can take a couple of weeks to process depending on where you apply, so it's worth requesting early.

6. Passport-size photos in the exact required format

Different countries have different background color, size, and headwear requirements for visa photos. A photo that meets Pakistani ID standards won't necessarily meet Gulf visa photo standards — check the specific format before you get photos taken.

Common reasons applications get delayed

  • Name spelling inconsistencies between the passport, the contract, and the educational certificates.
  • Medical test results expiring before the visa is issued.
  • Attestation done in the wrong order or at the wrong office.
  • Job title on the visa application not matching the job title on the contract.

Requirements do shift from time to time depending on the destination country and current regulations, so treat this as a general starting checklist rather than a final one — always confirm the current requirements for your specific visa category before applying.
